The application of Electrodeionization (EDI) systems in pharmaceuticals.
Release time:2024-07-09
Electrodeionization (EDI) is one of the key technologies used in the pharmaceutical industry for the production of ultra-pure water. It combines electrochemical and ion exchange technologies to effectively remove ions from water, producing ultra-pure water (UPW) that meets pharmaceutical requirements.
Electrodeionization (EDI) is one of the key technologies used in the pharmaceutical industry for producing ultra-pure water. It combines electrochemical and ion exchange technologies to effectively remove ions from water, producing ultra-pure water (UPW) that meets pharmaceutical requirements.
Working principle: Electrochemical process → Ion exchange resin → Ionization process → Discharge of residues → Collection of purified water
The EDI system includes an anode (positive electrode) and a cathode (negative electrode). By applying an electric field, ions in the water are induced to move towards the electrodes. The electrolytic cell embedded with ion exchange resin allows the resin to adsorb ions from the water as it flows through. When the electric field is applied, the ions in the water are forced to move to the surface of the ion exchange resin and are released. The discharged ions and other contaminants are expelled from the system in concentrated liquid form, ensuring that the electrolytic cell remains clean. The purified water (UPW) processed by EDI is collected from the electrolytic cell and can be directly used in pharmaceutical processes that require extremely high water quality, such as water for injection and filling water.
Specific scenarios for application in pharmaceuticals:
Water for Injection (PWFI): The UPW produced by the EDI system can be further treated to meet the standards for water for injection.
Filling Water: Used during the drug filling process to ensure that the water quality meets requirements and does not contaminate the drugs.
Preparation of detergents and solvents: In pharmaceutical processes, high-purity water is also needed as a raw material when preparing detergents, solvents, and drug diluents.
Through the EDI system, pharmaceutical companies can efficiently and reliably produce ultra-pure water that meets strict requirements, ensuring the quality and safety of pharmaceutical processes.
